Luthier Darren from Decibel Guitars is certainly years ahead of most in his designs and visions. His Javelin model (and the way it’s bent top is conceived) is certainly a work of art in its execution and innovative construction methods. I have recently viewed Misha Mansoor’s video of him receiving the first production model, so please have a look below as well. That boy can play ! Of course my good friend Fred “The Shred” has one of Darren’s creations on order too.

Darren and I have been creating a new way to manufacture the body in two almost equal thickness pieces. Because of the bent top this was a difficult task to program and innovate into CAD. The top wood is usually extremely rare and expensive so waste is not an option. I’ve requested my usual Graphtech nut material, Hannes bridge with Graphtech saddles, snakewood fingerboard and headstock overlay, custom knob positions, 6 way Free-Way toggle, my signature DiMarzio pickups, 14″ to 22″ radius fretboard, stainless Jescar frets and so much more. Darren and I hunted for a very long time to find the top for this guitar. I wanted it to look a certain way and we succeeded in finding the one piece top.

I’m trying to innovate and combine something from my Watchmaking world into this guitar. It’s a product I think will spread fast into guitars. We’ll see how it flies. Darren has also innovated a back plate for the Hannes bridge that will be a first.

We are also designing a Spitz V type of innovative shape. I’ve waited to find the right person to do this with and I think we have something super close to prototype now. Turtles anyone ?

You can follow the build of my Javelin and specifications on Decibel Guitars site.

Have to say after recording with these, the pickups are nailed.

I stumbled upon luthier Jaden Rose (of the United Kingdom guitar company Jaden Rose Guitars) as I was online searching for the finest and most innovative builders out there for making my new guitar arsenal. I needed a couple of 8 string guitars for future writing of the second CD. I found a video of an incredible artist named Fred “The Shred” Brum online playing a Jaden Rose prototype 8 string spider and I was simply in awe of its tone (and of course Fred’s playing). I feel an 8 string is certainly going to play a large role in the next wave of intense music, but the way it’s built dictates the necessary use.

Jaden has come up with a build design that gets rid of the mud and gives sheer trajectory for clarity of all notes across the board. So we started on our path of obtaining the wood I needed that’s a bit more personal to how I play, as well as some very serious inventions along the way. I suggested attaching the neck with ferule inserts and connected him with my friends at Graphtech for my nut material, my Jescar stainless frets and of course some Snakewood.

I came up with another idea for modifying the Hipshot bridge as well. I contacted my endorsers at Graphtech and Hipshot to acquire some raw Tusq type material in bulk and we are machining a special back piece that adds significant tone transmission increase. This piece will be made out of the Graphtech material. A first.

The neck wood was acquired and found by me (this took weeks). It will be a beautiful quarter sawn piece of figured /extremely curly claro walnut. The density of this piece falls right into place as to the needs I have for instant attack, quick release and mid range punch of all 8 strings. I found a piece large enough to make 2 or 3 necks for future use.

The body wood will be a close 50%/50% split of Black dirty Limba back and stupid thick Red Heart Quilted / Curly Maple. It took me a very long time to find this top, and another for a second creation we are doing as well of another kind. Quite easy to find thin normal tops like a Les Paul would use, but I wanted the body to be an almost split and that meant over a 1″ thick piece to start the carve.

You can follow the build on Jaden Rose Guitar’s site under “diary” .

I have the good fortune to be offered my own amplifier model from Carol Ann Amplifiers.

We’ve been working on an amp together for a long time now and I’ve recently received the first model. I used aCarol Ann for most of the lead guitar work on my new project and contacted them to let them know how incredible the amplifier was. I tried endless amounts of amps searching for my tone and this amp is simply built just for how I play. It’s kind of a Dumble meets high gain Marshall meets the next century tone not yet invented. Really responsive and gives me my own tone signature. An extremely fluid amplifier that reacts as an extension of your slightest touch and if pushed to shredding it’s not in your way and works with you. It’s my honor to have this amp made by master Allen Phillips. He makes a model for Joe Bonamassa as well so you know we’re not joking around here with tone.

I always had a dream that someone would take the Dumble qualities and apply to an amp metal guys can play. Well….. . . . Here she is !

You can contact Carol Ann Amps and have one made or have a look at anything he makes. They are little Ferrari shred machines with tone.

I’ve been working with the incredible pickup designer Steve Blucher at DiMarzio on my own pickups. What a great honor to have the inventor of so many incredible pickups work with me. I’ve received the first prototype set and they are just simply spectacular. Exactly what I requested the first time out of the gate.

I have to say that these are the fastest reacting pickups I’ve ever witnessed. The initial attack is instant and then they just sit there awaiting your fastest shred riffs laughing at you. The tone tends to lean toward the future and not the past.

What’s really interesting is how thick the bridge coil wind is, but the resistance reading is way lower than you would think. Certainly something new inside there.

A tone you can chew !!

Here are some pics as they arrived:

The first guitar I’m co-designing is with Cyan Guitars of Germany. Tom is one of the elite in this world making entire instruments from beginning to end solely by himself. These are on a level of perfection you must hold in your hand to understand.

A lot of guitar players and fans of Paul Reed Smith ( PRS ) Guitars have asked me to see the original drawings of the “Fugly” headstock I designed for Paul Reed Smith Guitars. Here are two of them.

The idea came from simply making a 6 in a row style headstock and stretching the current PRS style into something so Ugly I would like it. I wanted it as pictured with my signature and the logo at tip, BUT Upside down in execution. The builders had to make 5 or 6 first runs in the normal fashion and not upside down first, and these were the ones I used on the Anthrax Re-Union tour. Never did get the upside down one or the ones with the Logo at the tip. I heard Winn and the wonderful people there did in fact make some later on. I think it would have looked really nice with Paul’s signature on there and kept plain as well.

I designed and innovated a lot of really great things with Grover Jackson for the Randy Rhoads shapes and had a great time with PRS having a go with this idea and many others that were tossed around. They make incredible guitars with a passion for the art that is evident in every one who works there.

I wish we could have made the PRS Flying V I designed !!!!!!!! It was sick. Unfortunately the drawings arrived with me at the PRS factory at the same time Gibson guitars law suit over the Les Paul shape was going on. Making a Paul Reed Smith flying V was my sole and ONLY goal to achieve over there besides the “Fugly” headstock. Paul was actually really excited to do it as well. Would have been the first “Metal” PRS. A flying V with the “Fugly” on it and 24 3/4″ scale hmmm.. lets see … carved ten top… !
